August 2016 Car Sales: Model wise sales figures

Indian automobile market is one of the most difficult markets for automakers to understand. Due to its diversity, whole country cannot be treated as a single entity. Consumer preferences change from state to state. Only few parameters can be commonized for the  whole country. Owing to these difficulties, car companies at times fail to sell some really good vehicles. Presently the whole country is crazy about SUVs. Kwid is a big success for Renault, its success can be attributed to its SUV like design. Few good but overpriced cars such as Innova Crysta and Hyundai Creta are selling like hot cakes and on the other hand some good cars like S-Cross though priced perfectly(after price correction by Maruti) are finding no takers.

Maruti, despite a decline in sales of its top selling cars Alto(-9%), Dzire(-16%), Swift(-23%) and Wagon-R(-1%) remained market leader. All these four models are aging and need an upgrade. Maruti already started developing new generation Swift based on Baleno platform and recently disclosed its plans to upgrade Alto. Baleno and Brezza are performing quite well and helped the company to maintain its market share. Ritz on the other hand showed an improvement of 158% compared to the same month last year. S-Cross though a good vehicle is not finding many takers, its sales are less than what it deserves.

11 cars from Maruti’s stable are among the top 20 selling cars of India! First 4 postions belong to Maruti only and 8,9,12,13,14,15 & 17 positions also belong to Maruti.  Car sales august 2016 Maruti

Hyundai’s top trio i10 Grand, i20 Elite and Creta together contributed  to 75% of the company’s sales. And the next three in ranking Eon, Xcent and i10 together contributed to 22% of the sales. The only under performers in the portfolio are Verna, Elentra and Santa-Fe. With the introduction of new generation Verna, its sales are expected to grow. Hyundai is planning to expand its portfolio to bridge the gap between Creta and Santa-Fe by introducing Tucson.

Hyundai with 4 cars is next to Maruti in the top 20 list. The company’s top four cars are i10 Grand, i20 Elite, Creta and Xcent.  Car sales august 2016 Hyundai

As always with Mahindra, Bolero is  its top seller. Bolero, Scorpio, KUV-100, TUV-300 and XUV-500 sales constitute 93% of total sales! KUV-100 despite its toyish looks is selling well. Selling Quanto even after the introduction of NuvoSport looks like an inventory clearance exercise. Rexton’s poor performance discouraged the company from introducing new SsangYong models.

Bolero(position 18) is the only car from Mahindra in top 20 list.

This time there is no single car from Honda in top 20 list.

Tata Motors initiative to promote Safe Sex among Indian truck drivers

Tata Motors India conducted a survey through which it found out around 2 million truck drivers visit sex workers annually of which only 11% use condoms. So to promote safe sex among truck drivers Tata Motors used the catchphrase DIPPER to introduce a new brand of condoms. For the campaign to reach every driver of the remotest areas Tata cleverly chose a catchphrase popular among the truck drivers. The line “Use Dipper At Night” is written on almost every truck.  Here is the campaign video ↓

The phrase, which is originally used to highlight the use of dipper lights during the dark in order to prevent blinding the drivers from the opposite direction, was designed in association with communication agency Rediffussion-Y&R. The campaign, aimed towards truckers to promote the value of safe sex, involves condoms called “Dipper” that are designed keeping in mind the colorful art or graffiti seen on trucks across the country.

Launched in April in order to raise awareness regarding the risks of HIV among other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD), the initiative, if successful, will be replicated across the country. The move is likely to see a positive response as the phrase is widely used and common with illiterate and literate truckers alike.

What do you think about this initiative by Tata Motors? Will the campaign prove to be a success? Pen down your views through the comments section below or tag us via Facebook and Twitter.

Tata Motors to help Volkswagen develop an Economy Car for emerging markets

One might wonder why Volkswagen approaches Tata Motors to develop a car. Volkswagen has been working on a budget car project since years but failed to keep the costs under control and hence approached Tata Motors(known for developing the world’s cheapest car Nano) for help.

595The auto giant Volkswagen plans to restart its small car project Budget Car. VW management is in talks with with Tata Motors, Manager Magazin reported in its latest issue (release date: July 22).

The Indian automaker should develop the model completely or partially for VW, according to the Wolfsburg Volkswagen headquarters. VW has been working on the project own their own since years. The Budget Car is designed for entry level markets like China and India. For the restart it was internally renamed Economy Car.

The developed in the past model approaches were repeatedly stopped. The VW developers did not get especially the costs under control. The car will be offered cheaper than the previously smallest VW model. The responsibility for the current project lies with brand chief Herbert Diess. Discussions on the possible development contract to Tata would however will be looked after by corporate strategy chief Thomas Sedran.

The German carmaker has repeatedly tried its hand at the compact car segment including a partnership with Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corporation but failed to crack the intensely competitive market.
