Ficosa bags five contracts for battery management systems for Chinese market

Ficosa, a top-tier global provider devoted to the research, development, manufacturing and marketing of high-technology vision, safety, connectivity and efficiency systems for the automotive sector, has closed five important contracts for battery management systems (BMS) for the Chinese market. These orders, placed by two tier-one automobile manufacturers, are valued at over €200 million and will be used for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

In the words of Jaume Prat, Ficosa’s Electromobility Systems Business Unit Director: “These contracts are an important milestone for Ficosa, expanding our portfolio of products in China and consolidating the company’s technological expansion in the field of electromobility. In addition to reaffirming our leadership in battery management systems, these orders reinforce our expertise as systems integrators, as we will deliver the whole system, including the electronic control unit (ECU) and the high-voltage protection devices (HVPD).”

Ficosa’s battery management systems give users the required safety and allow them to monitor the battery charge level at all times, as well as its health. The software, hardware and mechanics for these orders are being developed at the Viladecavalls Technology Centre (Barcelona, Spain), while production, which will begin in 2019, will take place at the Taicang Technical Centre (China).

With these orders, Ficosa is reaffirming its leadership in electromobility, a sector in which it develops software and hardware solutions for hybrid, electric and hydrogen vehicles. These products stand out for their quality, reliability, innovative technology and compliance with the strictest standards. Specifically, the company produces battery management systems (BMS), electrical boxes to protect and distribute power from the battery (BDU / eBOX) and battery charging devices (OBC) in the field of electromobility.

With these efforts both companies are laying the ground work for upcoming generations of highly automated and autonomous Mercedes-Benz vehicles* to come to market with the benefits of HD Live Map on board. For Daimler, this is a logical step as the current E- and S-class models are already using maps from HERE.

Highly precise digital maps are a key component for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving. The machine-readable, cloud-based HD Live Map allows an automated vehicle to effectively ‘see around corners’ and consists of multiple layers of information essential for it to know where exactly it is, what lies ahead and what it should do in various scenarios.

Maps from cars for cars: self-healing maps require large amounts of vehicle sensor data

HERE has created HD Live Map to be “self-healing”. This means it can reflect dynamic changes in the road environment and update itself accordingly in near real-time. This enables vehicles to proactively adjust to changing road conditions – for example, switching lanes and adjusting speed ahead of time in the case of an upcoming lane closure.

Vehicle sensor data is the most crucial element for an HD map to self-heal because of its quality, and the sheer volume of vehicles on the road that can detect and validate change. HERE is already receiving rich vehicle sensor data from multiple automakers, including Daimler, to produce near real-time map updates. With passenger safety top of mind, HERE HD Live Map constantly publishes changes to the map through an innovative content validation process, where multiple vehicle sensors act as a “closed loop” to detect any deviations from the published data.

DENSO and Toshiba to Collaborate on IoT-based Manufacturing, Advanced Driver Assistance, Automated Driving, and Others

KARIYA, TOKYO (Japan) – DENSO Corporation and Toshiba Corporation today announced that the two companies have begun talks to enhance collaborations in the fields of Internet of Things (IoT)-based manufacturing, advanced driver assistance, automated driving, and others.

The collaborations aim to combine DENSO’s high level of technology and manufacturing capability accumulated through its experience in the automotive market and Toshiba’s image recognition, IoT, artificial intelligence (AI), and software development technologies, in order to increase the competitiveness to make it through the paradigm shift that is taking place in the automotive industry.

In the fields of advanced driver assistance and automated driving, DENSO and Toshiba have jointly developed AI technologies used in image recognition systems. Moreover, the two companies have worked together in a wide range of areas including the development of automotive lithium-ion battery packs and software for ECUs used in automotive components.

Volvo Cars & Autoliv AB came together to form the joint venture Zenuity which makes ADAS software

Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, and Autoliv, the worldwide leader in automotive safety systems, have signed a final agreement to establish a new joint venture called Zenuity to develop software for autonomous driving and driver assistance systems, based on the letter of intent announced during fall 2016.

 Zenuity will create a new entrant in the fast growing global market for autonomous driving software systems. It marks the first time a leading premium car maker has joined forces with a tier one supplier to develop new advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AD) technologies.

As part of the agreement announced today, at the time of closing Autoliv will make a total investment of around 1.1 billion SEK into the joint venture, the large majority of which is an initial cash contribution, and which also includes certain assets. Volvo Cars will also contribute certain intellectual property assets and human resources to the joint venture, but no cash. As previously announced, Autoliv and Volvo Cars will own the joint venture 50/50.

Headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden and with additional operations in Munich, Germany, and Detroit, USA, the initial workforce of around 200 people will come from Volvo Cars and Autoliv. The company is expected to grow to over 600 employees in the medium term. Operations are expected to start during the first half of 2017 after approvals from relevant competition authorities in several countries have been obtained and other customary closing conditions have been satisfied.

 Both Volvo Cars and Autoliv will license and transfer the intellectual property for their ADAS systems to the joint venture. From this base, the company will develop new ADAS products and AD technologies. The new company is expected to have its first driver assistance products available for sale by 2019 with autonomous driving technologies following shortly thereafter.

 Autoliv will be the exclusive supplier and distribution channel for all the new company’s products sold to third parties, and there will be no exclusivity toward any customer or the owners. Volvo Cars will source such products directly from the new joint venture.

 As previously announced, Dennis Nobelius will be the Chief Executive Officer of the joint venture. The joint venture will be governed by a separate board of directors, and independently operate within its own facilities.
