Tata Motors signs on Akshay Kumar as brand ambassador for its Commercial Vehicles Business

tata-motors-commercial-vehicles-brand-ambassdor-akshay-kumar

On the one hand, Bollywood’s most bank-able star, on the other, the country’s most reliable commercial vehicles brand. While one fits into any role with absolute ease, the other masters every terrain with complete nonchalance. Driven, ambitious and versatile, they both have a lot riding on them. But they are both made of sterner stuff, and have what it takes, to bear the ‘load’ of others’ expectations.

Tata Motors, the country’s largest automotive player and among the top 10 truck and bus manufacturers globally, today announced the appointment of Bollywood film star Akshay Kumar, as the brand ambassador for its Commercial Vehicle Business Unit. Indian Cinema’s ‘original Khiladi’ will make his blockbuster entry in this new role at the launch of Tata Motors’ latest offering in Commercial Vehicles, slated in January 2017.

Tata Motors’ association with Akshay Kumar for Commercial vehicles will be supported by a high-decibel, multi-media campaign, beginning in the first week of January 2017. Besides products and solutions, Akshay will be actively involved in a host of innovative marketing and customer experience initiatives to be rolled out by Tata Motors.

Mr. Ravindra Pisharody, Executive Director, Commercial Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors, said, “We are delighted to announce versatile and reliable Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar as the new face of Tata Motors’ Commercial Vehicles Business Unit. Akshay embodies dynamism, popularity, machismo, performance and style. More importantly, he blends well with the core values of trust, reliability, responsibility and good leadership of Tata Motors’ Commercial Vehicles Business. Besides, today we are catering to an audience that defines the driven, ambitious, forward-moving, non-stop pulse of India and Akshay understands the pulse of this audience well. That is why, with careful selection and preparation, he goes on to entertain and enthral his fans with one performance after another. Just as Tata Motors constantly endeavours to understand the ever-changing needs of its customers and builds innovative platforms to provide customised products and solutions catering to different segments. We are confident that Akshay’s popularity will further help complement and articulate the future direction of the Tata Motors commercial vehicles brand.”

Speaking on the association, Akshay Kumar said, “The Tata brand is one that most of us have grown up with and now to be associated with them is indeed an honour. No one understands Indian trucking better than Tatas and there couldn’t have been a better and more apt brand to promote. It was fun being in the driver’s seat of one of those monster machines, during a product shoot”

The last six decades has been exciting for Tata Motors in the commercial vehicles space. Tata Motors has been the market leader in India in Commercial Vehicles with an unparalleled product range from sub 1 tonne to 49 tonne load applications. The company has been a pioneer in introducing innovative platforms like Ace, Prima and building customized solutions for all segments, including the defence business. The company has rolled out a series of initiatives to deliver best customer value, with technology being at the forefront. Today, the Tata Motors stable accounts for more than 70% of the last mile cargo-running mini-trucks in the country.

In its endeavor to make a meaningful contribution to the society, in 2013, Tata Motors conducted a successful pilot initiative ‘Hamare Bus Ki Baat Hai’ with interactive sessions designed with the objective of sensitizing school bus staff, on the safety of children during school bus travel. In 2014, this initiative was launched across the country and today Tata Motors has trained over thousands of school bus staff on school bus safety.

OX: world’s first flat-pack-truck revealed; Can be packed shipped & reassembled like IKEA furniture

Gordon Murray, the brain behind McLaren F1 & Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren, has designed a vehicle that is far from a supercar but, in his own words, “ranks above anything else I’ve ever done.”

gordon-murray
Gordon Murray

The utility vehicle is designed with an intention to provide services in developing and underdeveloped nations. The vehicle can be easily folded into a box and can be transported to the desired destination and after reaching the destination it can be reassembled.

03_gvt

The OX truck can be unboxed and assembled by three people in not more than 12 hours! Six such trucks can be shipped in a single 40 foot container.

The main considerations for design are: the vehicle should be affordable, easy to ship, easy to service & maintain, durable & reliable, all terrain capable and economical to run. Striking balance between all these parameters isn’t that easy as few parameters are inversely proportional to each other. Achieving an optimal balance between all these parameters is a commendable job.

09_gvt

The fully-assembled truck is a highly capable off-roader despite lacking all-wheel drive. Powered by a 2.2-liter 16v Ford PT22 diesel engine producing 100 HP and 385Nm of torque, the OX can carry more than 1900kg of cargo, with a load volume of 247 cubic feet. It can also be configured to seat up to 13 people, or carry eight 44-gallon drums or three Euro-pallets. The driver sits in the center of the cab like in McLaren F1, with a passenger seat on either side. The center-steer configuration means the truck can be used in right-hand drive or left-hand drive nations without any mechanical changes.

Gordon Murray says the OX program is “undoubtedly one of the most interesting and challenging” projects he has undertaken in his 45 years of career, including his years in F1. Given the cost, durability and capacity requirements and the flat-pack design of the OX design mandate, we can understand why Murray calls it “a fascinating and stimulating journey from concept to prototype”.

Global Vehicle Trust(GVT) founded by Sir Torquil Norman is the organization behind the development of the OX truck. GVT approached Murray for the design. Sir Torquil Norman is a British businessman who previously founded Bluebird Toys company. Norman was originally inspired by the 1980s Africar book.

[Video] Volvo trucks – Iron Knight – World speed record

Some trucks are built for hauling loads of cargo across continents. Volvo’s “Iron Knight” was designed to destroy records. And that’s exactly what this one-off speed machine did.

The Volvo Trucks Iron Knight is an almost completely-custom-built semi-truck, made specifically for smashing the world speed records for trucks in the half-kilometer and one-kilometer sprints. The truck uses a 13.0-liter mid-mounted engine that pumps out 2,400-horsepower and 4,425 pound-feet of torque, routing it to the eight rear wheels through a dual-clutch gearbox.

In a video uploaded to YouTube by Volvo on Wednesday, the Swedish truck company reveals the story of how its giant truck broke the company’s previous speed records in the 500-meter and 1,000-meter speed runs while hitting a top speed of 171 miles per hour along the way. With Swedish truck racer Boije Ovebrink behind the wheel, the Iron Knight took two runs each way down a long piece of closed-off tarmac in its efforts to blaze its way into the record books. Ultimately, Ovebrink managed a time of 13.71 seconds in the 500-meter sprint while averaging 81.58 mph; he also ran the 1,000-meter distance in 21.29 seconds, at an average speed of 105 mph.

Those runs mean the Swedish truck driver handily broke the previous world records—which he also set, driving Volvo’s “Mean Green” hybrid truck back in 2012. That’s not super-shocking, though; the Iron Knight has 600 more horsepower and is around 2,200 pounds lighter than the previous record-setting rig.

Finally, Maruti to launch Super Carry within this year – says R C Bhargava

Tata Ace and Mahindra Maxximo to get a new rival from Maruti in the form of Super Carry. Until now the segment is dominated by Tata, Mahindra and Ashok Leyland. Have to see how Maruti will fare in the commercial segment.

maruti-suzuki-super-carry-press-shot
Maruti’s LCV Super Carry  is code named Y9T will be launched this year.

According to Economic Times, Maruti’s chairman R C Bhargava confirmed that the Super Carry will be launched in India within this year.

Super Carry was scheduled to be launched much earlier but was delayed due to re-engineering works.

According to the report, the delay was due to the wrong understanding of the load factor by Maruti. “We could not understand the load factor in the segment. Unlike a car, where you can seat four-to-five people with some luggage, an LCV gets abused in the Indian market. A one tonne truck often carries 1.5 tonne,” the executive said, citing the firm’s inexperience in the Indian LCV market and its inability to read attributes of the vehicle properly as the reasons for the delay.” said the company executive.

“First time in over 30 years of company’s history, a product is delayed,” said a top company executive directly involved with the matter, on condition of anonymity.

Interestingly India made Super Carry is on sale at Tanzania since June this year, where unlike in India the trucks are loaded as per their capacity rating. The export version is powered by 1.2 liter  72ps petrol  engine.

The Indian version Super Carry will come equipped with two engine options, 1200cc  petrol  engine and 800cc diesel in different tune from the export version. 800cc diesel is already on duty on Celerio.
