Emission standards for diesel generator sets in India

Emissions from new diesel engines used in generator sets have been regulated by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. The regulations impose type approval testing, production conformity testing and labeling requirements. The regulations also include a list of authorized agencies for type approval testing.

Engines up to 800 kW. Emission limits for new diesel engines ≤ 800 kW used in genset applications were set in 2002 and strengthened in 2013. The regulations also set noise limits for diesel generator sets up to 1000 kVA.

The emission standards are listed below. Table 1 summarizes the standards that became applicable in 2004/2005, and Table 2 lists the strengthened limits applicable from April 2014.

Engines are tested over the 5-mode ISO 8178 D2 test cycle. Smoke opacity must not exceed the limits at full load (Table 1) or at any load point of the test cycle (Table 2). The same limits are applicable for type approval and for conformity of production (COP) testing.

Engines above 800 kW. Emission standards for new diesel engines above 800 kW used in genset applications were phased-in between 2003 and 2005, Table 3.

November 2016 car sales figures in India; Tata Motors climbed to third position!

Maruti and Hyundai occupying 1st and 2nd positions respectively is a common phenomenon. But what is new in November 2016 sales figures is Tata coming to 3rd position pushing Mahindra to 4th , looks like Tatas effort to renovate its brand perception and to improve its interior quality and the Impact Design Philosophy and all other efforts are slowly showing their results. Tata Motors present CEO Guenter Butschek who previously worked for Airbus and Daimler AG is known for his keen eye towards everything which is also helping the company.


Despite the demonetization effect, passenger vehicle industry in India saw a humble growth of 2% in November 2016. Maruti(14.1%) and Hyundai(-8.3%) retained their 1st and 2nd positions respectively. Despite a slight degrowth in the sales of Alto, Swift and Dzire, Maruti is able to grow its market-share(52.2%) due to the sales of Vitara Brezza & Baleno. Maruti infact intentionally reduced(despite good sales) the production capacity of other models and phased out Ritz production to accommodate Baleno and Vitara Brezza.

Hyundai retained its second position though its market share declined from 17.8% in October to 14.3% in November. We have to wait for the model wise sales figures to come out to see what models did sell well and what models didn’t sell well for Hyundai Motors in November. Hyundai Motors India recently introduced Tucson which fills the slot between Creta and Santa FE.

Tata Motors(21.1%) on the other hand silently rose to 3rd position which it very well deserves. Tata Motors after various revival plans started seeing positive results. The company is now enjoying sleeper success, the company is planning to enter new segments like compact SUV with the introduction of Tata Nexon and also planning to revive the existing portfolio. The other upcoming models from Tata Motors are sub 4 meter sedan Kite-5(codename), top of the line Tata Hexa and Tiago Sport & Aktiv. With the success of Tiago and the future launches Tata is expected to further strengthen its market position.

Mahindra(-32.8%) lost its 3rd position to Tata Motors. Mahindra’s Nuvosport is not selling well as per company’s expectation. The company’s top seller is Bolero is aging which sooner or later needs a replacement which if not done will massively impact the company sales.

Toyota(10.0%) and Honda(-45.4%) swapped their positions. Introduction of Innova Crysta is helping Toyota while Honda is seeing a study decline in sales since the last few months. Renault(22.8%) retained its 6th position. Ford(-21.6%), though having a good portfolio is not selling well as expected by the company. The all new Endeavour, though selling well, now have to fare against the newly introduced Fortuner. Owing to the introduction of Ameo, Volkswagen(106.7%) climbed to 9th position. Nissan(51.8%) though sold more cars in November-16 compared to last November, its sales drastically declined from 6,108 in OCT’16 to 3,974 in NOV’16. There isn’t much to talk about Chevrolet(13.5%). Rest of the pack saw a decline in sales compared to same period last year.
