During his routine morning jogs, Vardhaman Kaushik often felt his stamina was going down. The young environment lawyer choked on what he felt was highly toxic air. In February 2014, he moved the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for relief.

He didn’t expect his ‘innocuous petition’ will escalate to the level it now has, and result in a ban for all petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel ones registered after 2005. The orders have come amid reports of worsening air pollution taking a dangerous toll on people.

Kaushik (26) said, “I was very saddened when the western media started mocking India when we surpassed China in terms of air pollution. I have a lot of expectations from this case. The ball is in the government’s court. Citizens should also wake up and make sacrifices.”

Kaushik who studied law in Pune and lives in Gurgaon says his family is prepared to make their first sacrifice. “One of the three cars we have in the family is a 2005 model (diesel) Mercedes-Benz. My father owns it but we will have to let go of our prized possession. Maybe we will keep it at a smaller place, where air pollution is not such a massive problem.

The NGT ordered all diesel vehicles, private and commercial, over 10 years old off Delhi-NCR’s roads to help clean the Capital’s toxic air. The action follows NGT’s November 2014 order banning all vehicles 15 years and older in Delhi.

“My limited plea was the causes for the rising air pollution should be identified and curbed. I made a submission and sought a direction to authorities to build cycle tracks, install air filters, and make a web portal for people to complain about activities like waste burning,” he said.

Kaushik feels government agencies initially displayed much hostility. “They said the Supreme Court was hearing an air pollution case, and my petition in the tribunal was not maintainable. But the tribunal said I could not be kept from taking recourse to my statutory right of seeking relief,” he said.

Government agencies have so far filed 15-20 affidavits. “But mostly they’re talking about letters written among each other and other such non-significant matters. There is not much progress on the ground,” he said. The biggest problem lies in implementation.

“The Delhi Pollution Control Committee’s helpline doesn’t work. They have not advertised the web portal. Today itself, I saw dry leaves being burnt near Barakhamba road,” he said.

It is not even known how many vehicles have been sold, scrapped or moved out of Delhi in the last 10-15 years.

My thoughts about hardware startups:

I always used to wonder why there were very few hardware startups in India compared to the number of software startups. It can be because of various reasons, few reasons that occurred to me are:

  1. Capital: Hardware startups require more seed capital compared to software startups.
  2. Availability of People: There are many engineers who are interested to work on software startups whereas in case of hardware startups the number is comparatively very low.
  3. Availability & Accessibility of required resources: For software startups, resources like computer, internet & programming languages(like java, c, c++ …etc ) are easily available & accessible over internet or at college labs. For hardware startups, resources like machines, materials & software(like CAD, CAM & FEA …etc) are comparatively less available & accessible and are costlier to access.
  4. Traction: Gaining traction for hardware startups is tougher compared to software startups.
  5. Distribution: Software products and services can be easily distributed to the end user through internet whereas the hardware  startups require physical infrastructure to distribute their products and services.

Ola launches Ola Play to Allow Users to Control In-Car Entertainment!

Uber launched a pilot service in Mumbai to allow passengers to stream their music from Gaana app in their ride. The pilot did not kick off well because there were not many users, and immediately shut down after a couple of weeks.

Ola is now getting into a similar business – in-car entertainment. However, unlike Uber, this will be made available to select customers taking Ola Prime rides. The service will be launched in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi initially and will roll out to other cities by March 2017.

The company says that it’ll be making use of proprietary in-car and cloud technology to provide in-car entertainment to users. This service will also give premium members of Ola, with the highest-rated drivers, to view content of their choice while they take the ride.

Ola Play is also a world’s first such technology and collaboration for a cab-aggregator. Ola and Qualcomm have partnered to provide customizable experience to passengers while they take their ride. Customers can use apps like Apple Music, Sony LIV, Audio Compass and Fynd to listen and watch music and videos.

Talking about this new service, Bhavish Aggarwal, Co-Founder and CEO – Ola said, “I believe this(Ola Play) will completely transform the consumer’s ride experience, giving the user the power to control the interactions within the car, and usher in a new era in the ridesharing industry.”

Mahindra & Mahindra is also investing in this in-car technology with Ola to provide the best experience to Ola users. Mahindra is planning to have retrofitted entertainment systems in cars just for Ola drivers so that the technology can be implemented smoothly.

How will this work?

The Ola cabs will come with in-car entertainment systems in the form of large screens fitted at the back of the car, where customers sit. Once you’re connected to the system, you will be able to control the movies, videos and music all through it.

The car will also be fitted with surround sound speakers for an immersive experience. You will get recommendations depending on your ride time and journey. If you’re going to travel from Koramangala to Bengaluru Airport, you will be able to watch longer shows and videos, and maybe listen to some music on the journey.

Is this investment worth it?

The segment Ola is targeting is very small. Firstly, only Ola Prime users will be able to avail this offer. Secondly, only select users will be able to use the in-car entertainment system. Ola Prime already is a small segment of Ola’s products and further narrowing of customers makes the market very small.

Moreover, the company is adding this entertainment system to attract more customers. However the prime cab tariffs are slightly higher and not preferable by Ola customers. This makes Ola Prime less attractive, but it should work for corporate professionals. For short rides as well, it doesn’t make sense for users to use Ola Play.

However, we feel that Ola should pilot this in a couple of cities before expanding it to other large cities. A lot is at stake now because Qualcomm and M&M are also involved in this technology and the companies will go to any extent to make it work.

The world’s first FreeValve engine intended for mass production will be driven on to the Qoros stage at the Guangzhou Motor Show in November, 2016. The ‘Qamfree’ engine will be powering a Qoros 3 hatchback that has been modified specifically for the Guangzhou show. The technology was developed by FreeValve AB, based in Ängelholm, Sweden.

Qoros debuted the Qamfree engine with FreeValve technology in a concept car at the Beijing Motor Show, in April 2016.

Called ‘Qamfree’ in the Qoros application, FreeValve uses a pneumatic-hydraulic-electronic actuator to replace the traditional camshaft-based method of controlling valve operation in an internal combustion engine. This results is much more precise and completely customizable control over valve duration and lift, on both the intake and exhaust sides.

The engine on show at Guangzhou is a 1.6 litre turbocharged engine using FreeValve technology to produce 230 horsepower and 320Nm of torque. This represents a 47% increase in power, a 45% increase in torque and a 15% reduction in fuel consumption when compared to a traditional camshaft engine with similar specifications.


The benefits are not confined to significant performance improvements and better fuel economy, however. In implementing FreeValve technology, manufacturers are able to do away with expensive parts such as the throttle body, camshaft, cam drive, timing gear and cover, wastegate, pre-catalytic converter systems and direct injection systems.

The comparative FreeValve engine is 20 kilograms lighter and much more compact, saving 50mm in height and 70mm in depth, which allows manufacturers exciting new vehicle design and packaging options.

“FreeValve technology has taken many years of testing and refinement but the results are extremely satisfying” said Urban Carlson, CEO of FreeValve AB. “This production-intent engine offers Qoros significant savings in emissions, cost and weight. It also offers groundbreaking benefits to vehicle owners in terms of a near 50% increase in both power and torque, while actually reducing fuel consumption.”

HYLIION develops add-on hybrid system for semi trailers; Innovation here is the way of applying hybrid tech to trailers

Hyliion has developed an add-on hybrid system for tractor-trailers that will reduce fuel consumption by about 30% with a return on investment of less than one year, according to Thomas Healy, CEO and founder of the Pittsburgh, PA-based startup.

“What makes our system unique is that we solely focus on the trailer,” Healy said to Off-Highway Engineering. “We replace the existing rear axle assembly under the trailer with an electric propulsion system. So now what happens is when the vehicle is slowing down or going downhill, we’re able to capture all that wasted energy and store it in the battery pack on the trailer.”

When the truck accelerates or starts an uphill stretch, the system drives the rear tires on the trailer. “So the diesel engine in the truck doesn’t have to work as hard, there’s not as much load it needs to pull,” he said.

The intelligent electric drive axle system was recently awarded the grand prize in the 2016 “Create the Future” Design Contest produced by Tech Briefs Media Group, beating out more than 1100 product ideas from 71 countries. The contest was co-sponsored by COMSOL and Mouser Electronics, with Analog Devices and Intel serving as supporting sponsors.

Most conventional hybrid strategies integrate an electric motor into the drivetrain of the truck. “Since we don’t integrate right into the drivetrain, you can keep all that existing equipment and not make any modifications to it. We’re getting the benefits of a hybrid system but with an add-on solution,” Healy said.

Essentially, Hyliion is turning a passive axle into a drive axle. “It’s like taking one of the axles off the truck and putting it on the trailer,” he explained. “So now we have a drive axle that we can apply positive and negative torque, with an electric motor connected to the axle.” The electric motor is connected to a control system with a lithium-based battery pack.


The company leverages existing components to help bring the product to market faster. For example, the axle is a production component that’s already been tested and has the weight rating certifications needed to travel over the road.

The system can be installed on nearly every trailer type in less than one hour, the company claims, without changing trailer height or length.

The electric drive axle system is categorized as an auxiliary power unit (APU), capable of powering auxiliaries overnight such as electronics and air-conditioning. Even though the system adds about 500 lb (227 kg) to a tractor-trailer, “the government in most states allows you to carry anywhere from 400-450 extra pounds of payload if you’re running an APU. So it’s really not netting much of a loss of cargo that you can carry,” Healy said.

The electric drive axle doesn’t have any data communication with the truck. The system’s sensors are able to determine when to apply power and when to capture energy. It does have cellular communication and satellite, so the vehicle can be tracked.

“From a fleet standpoint, you can look at how fast your trailers are moving and where they’re located, and we can do things like tell you how much load is in the trailer,” Healy said.

Information is available to the driver via a mobile dashboard application. The driver has the ability to turn the system on and off.

“Our single product is able to propel you above those mandated requirements,” said Healy. “We see it being a perfect solution for this new Phase 2 mandate that’s coming out. From a timing standpoint, it couldn’t be better.”

Hyliion currently has six trucks running with its system for internal testing and validation. “The next phase is we’ve got over 30 fleets that have signed into our pilot program that we’re going to start delivering units to before the end of this year,” he said.

In-house production of the electric drive axle system is expected to begin Q1 2017, and the company is lining up outsourced production for higher volumes in Q2 2017.

“Our next big milestone is really setting up the production,” Healy shared. “There is a lot of demand in the industry for a product like this…How can we manage all the production and supply chain so that we can grow at a very fast pace and get our partners alongside us to grow at the same rate? Our mindset is scaling up production as fast as possible to as high a volume as possible.”

LOS ANGELES /PRNewswire/ — Hyundai Motor and WaiveCar, the world’s first all-electric car-sharing program that runs on advertising dollars, today announced a partnership that will expose millions of shoppers to the all-new Hyundai IONIQ electric compact car for free.

The partnership, proposed by WaiveCar as part of Hyundai’s Project IONIQ open call, gives consumers the ability to drive IONIQ EVs on-demand for two hours at no charge. In exchange, the vehicle is wrapped in advertising and includes a roof mounted digital display, which generates the advertising revenue WaiveCar uses to offset costs. WaiveCar’s digital displays are 4G connected enabling dynamic, geo-targeted advertising tailored to ones driving location and time of day. For example, while sitting in morning traffic on the 405 freeway, the ad could read, “This commute would be a lot more comfortable in a Hyundai IONIQ.”


“WaiveCar presents some great solutions for us,” said Mark Dipko, director of corporate planning and strategy at Hyundai Motor America. “The IONIQ offers emissions-free transportation to on-the-go Angelenos. The program, which will launch in early 2017, is Hyundai’s first large-scale involvement in car-sharing and is aimed at making it easy for those without a vehicle to access short-term, free, and engaging transportation. Customers can simply download WaiveCar’s app for iPhone or Android, find an IONIQ near them, book it and start driving — no cards or keys necessary. WaiveCar then unlocks the door for consumers remotely, where they can find the keys inside. Insurance is also part of the all-inclusive-deal.

Users can drive an IONIQ for free for 2 hours at a time. They can continue to drive for just $5.99 an hour or return the car at any designated spot for the next user to pick up. This free floating car-sharing model allows more users to use the same car, which reduces congestion and pollution on a much larger scale.

WaiveCar plans to add 150 IONIQs which will be deployed throughout Los Angeles in the first half of 2017. WaiveCar is planning to launch in three additional cities by the end of 2017 using 250 more IONIQs.
