Indian automobile market is one of the most difficult markets for automakers to understand. Due to its diversity, whole country cannot be treated as a single entity. Consumer preferences change from state to state. Only few parameters can be commonized for the whole country. Owing to these difficulties, car companies at times fail to sell some really good vehicles. Presently the whole country is crazy about SUVs. Kwid is a big success for Renault, its success can be attributed to its SUV like design. Few good but overpriced cars such as Innova Crysta and Hyundai Creta are selling like hot cakes and on the other hand some good cars like S-Cross though priced perfectly(after price correction by Maruti) are finding no takers.
Maruti, despite a decline in sales of its top selling cars Alto(-9%), Dzire(-16%), Swift(-23%) and Wagon-R(-1%) remained market leader. All these four models are aging and need an upgrade. Maruti already started developing new generation Swift based on Baleno platform and recently disclosed its plans to upgrade Alto. Baleno and Brezza are performing quite well and helped the company to maintain its market share. Ritz on the other hand showed an improvement of 158% compared to the same month last year. S-Cross though a good vehicle is not finding many takers, its sales are less than what it deserves.
11 cars from Maruti’s stable are among the top 20 selling cars of India! First 4 postions belong to Maruti only and 8,9,12,13,14,15 & 17 positions also belong to Maruti.
Hyundai’s top trio i10 Grand, i20 Elite and Creta together contributed to 75% of the company’s sales. And the next three in ranking Eon, Xcent and i10 together contributed to 22% of the sales. The only under performers in the portfolio are Verna, Elentra and Santa-Fe. With the introduction of new generation Verna, its sales are expected to grow. Hyundai is planning to expand its portfolio to bridge the gap between Creta and Santa-Fe by introducing Tucson.
Hyundai with 4 cars is next to Maruti in the top 20 list. The company’s top four cars are i10 Grand, i20 Elite, Creta and Xcent.
As always with Mahindra, Bolero is its top seller. Bolero, Scorpio, KUV-100, TUV-300 and XUV-500 sales constitute 93% of total sales! KUV-100 despite its toyish looks is selling well. Selling Quanto even after the introduction of NuvoSport looks like an inventory clearance exercise. Rexton’s poor performance discouraged the company from introducing new SsangYong models.
Bolero(position 18) is the only car from Mahindra in top 20 list.
All the bread and butter models of Honda saw less takers this month compared to last year. Amaze(-24%), Jazz(-29%) and City(-21%) are the company’s top sellers. BR-V is eating into Mobilio(-68%) sales. All new Brio is coming up with refreshed interiors.
This time there is no single car from Honda in top 20 list.
Tata is having good products in its basket, but not selling well due to brand perception issues. Tiago is Tata’s present bestseller, is all set to upturn the company’s fortunes & perception. Tiago is all that is needing for Tata at the moment. Styling proved to be one of the downplayer for the company and the other being after-sales-service. Bolt(-35%) and Zest(5%) are good products but failed to find takers. Tiago is eating into Nano(-68%) sales. Come on Tata ramp up your production to meet Tiago’s demand.
Tata’s new kid on the block Tiago is ranked 19 in the top 20 list.
Owing to the success of Kwid, Renault climbed to top 5 position in Indian car sales. But depending on single model is not good for the company, the company should expand its portfolio before it loses its momentum. Duster sales improved by 50% and there is nothing much to talk about the rest of the pack.
Kwid is 7th top selling car in the top 20 list.
Innova Crysta(59%) with 8229 takers is the company’s top seller and next best sellers are Etios & Liva. Toyota had to immediately bring in the all new Fortuner(-57%) to put a hold to its sales decline.
Innova Crysta is ranked 11 in the best selling cars of India list.
Ecosport(67%) and Endeavour are the the top sellers for Ford. Mustang found 20 takers which is not bad for its segment. Figo and Aspire(-75%) are not performing as per the company’s expectations.
Ford Ecosport is also featured in the top 20 list.
81% of Nissan’s sales is from Datsun’s portfolio and 19% is from Nissan’s portfolio. New kid on the block Redi-GO is the company’s top seller.
Volkswagen’s sub 4 meter sedan Ameo is the company’s top seller. Polo(-61%), Vento(-36%), and Jetta(-4%) sales declined. But the total sales improved by 6%.
All the models of Chevrolet saw a decline in sales except the Cruze which improved by 123%. Chevrolet should consider refreshing its entire range in India to improve its sales. Total sales of the company declined by 20%.
Skoda’s top seller is Rapid(-19%). Superb is doing better than its competitor Toyota Camry. Superb’s sales were 3 times that of Camry. Octavia with a sales figure of 225 saw a marginal increase of 4%.
All the models of Fiat are underperforming . Come on Fiat do something to improve sales in India, you got some wonderful cars at hand. Just don’t be satisfied by selling engines!
